Investigate a Mystery
Investigation always raises interesting questions. One of the most challenging failure
conditions to handle, possibly. What happens when Investigate fails?
Using Magic
Use Magic can do intentionally open-ended things. Each table has to define magic's limits for itself.
By default, magic lasts about 30 min and has no dangerous side effects, including not drawing
attention (unless, perhaps, there's a glitch...).
Inflict harm (1-harm ignore-armour magic obvious).
Enchant a weapon. It gets +1 harm and +magic.
Do one thing that is beyond human limitations.
Bar a place or portal to a specific person or a type of creature.
Trap a specific person, minion, or monster.
Banish a spirit or curse from the person, object, or place it inhabits.
Summon a monster into the world.
Communicate with something that you do not share a language with.
Observe another place or time.
Heal 1-harm from an injury, or cure a disease, or neutralize a poison
The effect is weakened.
The effect is of short duration.
You take 1-harm ignore-armour magic.
The magic draws immediate, unwelcome attention.
It has a problematic side effect.
Weird materials
10 seconds to a minute to cast.
Chanting or gestures.
Arcane symbols.
One or two helpers needed.
Reference to a tome of magic.
Keeper notes:
Extra requirements should depend on the size of the spell.
Read a Bad Situation
When entering a dangerous area, scoping out a lair, or
corroborating the hairs standing up on the back of their neck, Read a Bad Situation
helps hunters gather meaningful observations so they can act.
Act Under Pressure
Is Act the catch-all move? It sure is useful.
Kick Some Ass
If harm is likely to be exchanged. If it's high-stakes or an attack from afar, it
might just be Act Under Pressure.
When in Doubt
If hunters want to do something not directly laid out in the moves, it's probably
going to fall into one of these two catch-alls:
- Act Under Pressure, or
- Use Magic
